Concrete Walls Projects and JAUS present, Case Study Los Angeles II: On the Perimeter, the second installment of an ongoing curatorial examination of different modes of study in Los Angeles.
This localized gathering within the sprawl of Los Angeles is a study of the virtual and physical landscape and its social and cultural behaviors, along with the archaeological unveiling of taboo ideas exposing the outer rim. Nine artists show new work investigating the idea of the perimeter, by making art in the heart of LA.
Case Study: Los Angeles (2011) at PØST was the catalyst that sparked a new collaboration between Concrete Walls Projects and an artist-run-space. In an effort to attain a community exchange and discourse among artists, this follow- up rendition is designed to reveal diverse hypotheses for artistic investigation. These artists arouse a dialogue, as they obsessively work to discover or often rediscover the transforming definition of what it means to be influenced by living and working in the “City of Angels.”
Concrete Walls Projects is an artist run, curatorial project focusing on building community through collaborative exhibitions, educational projects, lectures and interdisciplinary gatherings with non-profits, artist-run-spaces, and educational institutions in Southern California. Established in 2003 by Devon Tsuno, Concrete Walls Projects has previously worked with Angels Gate Cultural Center, Cypress College, CSULB, Irvine Fine Arts Center, the Loft, PØST, and Summercamp’s ProjectProject.

Concrete Walls Projects presents a one-day exhibit organized for PØST’s July 2011 Kamikaze Exhibits series titled, Case Study: Løs Angeles. This exhibition is a curatorial case study, examining work by artists whose practice involves rigorous modes of research, as they document the microcosms of subculture and landscape that is the greater Los Angeles area. But unlike traditional gallery exhibits, which primarily function as an expedient dialogue between buyer and seller; the artist run space can subvert that dialogue, while maintaining a gallery’s purpose, in order to create a conversation among artists. This exhibit is designed to reveal diverse hypotheses in artistic investigation, in an effort to attain a community exchange and discourse among artists. These ten artists arouse the dialogue, as they work within the constraints of the two-dimensional picture plane to obsessively document and rediscover the ever-changing definition of Los Angeles.
Case studies: Los Angeles punk, Mount Waterman, Rodeo Drive socialites, Idyllwild, illegal downtown LA fix gear bicycle racing, LA Harbor, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Exposition Boulevard, and the 405 freeway.
A visit to the North Mt Washington studio of LA artist Susan Logoreci. A never exhibited drawing of East Hollywood will be included in the upcoming one day Concrete Walls Project at PØST on July 1, 2011
VIDEO TEASER! NEW VIDEO ON VIEW FRIDAY AT:
CASE STUDY: LØS ANGELES
Filmmaker, WARREN KOMMERS will be showing a new, never before screened, video short titled “RACING THE END” at PØST this Friday. This extended trailer for his upcoming Bicycle Film Festival movie WOLFPACK HUSTLE: Marathon Crash Race 2.
Of any city in the world, the sprawling City of Angels is best known for it’s dependence on the automobile. However, once a year for 6 hours the city closes down 26 miles of Los Angeles’ most congested arteries for the LA Marathon. Unbeknownst to city officials, at 4 AM over 400 cyclists took to the streets to race the closed course, led by by LA’s Wolfpack Hustle. While the runners were still nestled in their beds, the riders claimed the streets as their own, weaving through the city, unhindered, on such normally traffic-laden roads as Sunset and Hollywood Boulevards.
Adding to the already hugely popular All City Team Race and Midnight Drag Race, The Marathon Crash Race, is the newest Wolfpack race concept. In it’s debut it became one of the largest unsanctioned street races in the world. This year, even more people travelled from out-of-state to challenge L.A.’s best on their home turf and try to take the coveted 1st place dog tags out of LA for the first time. This is street athleticism at it’s finest.

July 2011 Kamikaze Exhibits
In the month of July, PØST will present thirty-one different exhibits. The July 2011 Kamikaze exhibits continue in the same tradition of thirty or thirty-one Kamikaze exhibits that were presented at PØST in September of 2009, July 2010 and January of 2011. Difficult times invite difficult gestures. By design, these exhibits remain close to art and distant from the other stuff. A book will be produced for each Kamikaze month.
